functioning autism constantly gets posts from people who describe their kids as having moderate or severe ASD, who then wonder why they're not getting a lot of recommendations for programs that fit their needs. I feel like I can't say anything because that would hurt their feelings, but why don't admins ever steer these folks to appropriate groups?
Also, maybe there aren’t groups, or activities for these kids, and their parents have nowhere else to go....(more)2-6-2019 11:26pm
I also think it’s fairly ableist to rank kids based on “functioning level.” Speaking about my own “high functioning “ ASD kid, she’s high functioning until she’s not. And she can have a huge meltdown and start self injuring under the “right” conditions, just as much as any non speaking autistic kid. I try not to judge other parents whose kids have bigger challenges than mine’s, knowing that it’s not a contest and “functioning” is relative.
