I have a cushy part time job as an in school Elem school math tutor. It's always been the best of all worlds: I get to actually work with kids but don't have to grade or plan....
This year I've been assigned to a classroom where the teacher is on maternity and leave and I hate. The. Sub. So. Much. I want to like her. I'm TRYING to like her. But she talks and talks and talks and the kids do nothing in there but listen and occasionally copy notes off the board. She never gives the them hands on activities or the chance to explore doing math on their own. So frustrating and I dread going in every day. My gentle suggestions are falling on deaf ears so I'm relegated to floating in her class while she talks and talks and talks and then hands out worksheets.
It's almost impossible to fill these jobs bc they get bt $90-100/day and are expected to do all the planning, grading, etc. When you factor in all those hours, the pay turns out...(more)9-20-2017 8:55am
to be less than $5/hr. So, honestly, this woman is doing fine for what she's getting paid. I just wish she'd let me come in and teach a lesson or two. I think she's mildly insecure bc any offer to do anything is met with "I got it." Honestly, she's kind to the kids and is covering the skills so I shouldn't complain. I'm just venting here bc I've gone from an engaging job to most of my job being mind numbing. As I'm typing I'm realizing that maybe I need to tell her that I teach lessons in other classes so she realizes the offer is not bc I think she's doing a bad job.
I helped tutor 4th graders in math a few years ago. I was so disgusted with how these few kids had math skills below my K kid at that point. Just left behind and promoted by the...(more)9-20-2017 8:55am
statement to be someone else's problem. Good school district but no one was teaching these bottom tier kids. Those kids need you, stay if you can.
OP: Oh - I am. Just have to keep my head down until the teacher gets back. And in this class I rarely get to work with the lower kids bc the teacher never turns them loose to do...(more)9-20-2017 8:57am
Math. She talks and talks and writes on the board and talks some more while the kids sit there and pretend to listen.
