My DB will be moving from a private SN school with small class size to a suburban public ICT classroom for K next year. My son has high functioning autism and is HIGHLY anxious...
and needs a lot of social and emotional support. What kinds of supports can I get written into the IEP aside from speech and OT services. I am mainly concerned about the initial transition to the classroom. Would like to have him be able to go see the classroom and meet teachers beforehand but not sure if something like this can be written into IEP. I am also concerned about him needing support during lunchtime, recess and the more unstructured portions of the day. He doesn't have behavioral problems so I don't think they will assign him an aide. He just might become mute when anxious or might not really engage. Any advice would be much appreciated.TIA

That said you can ask and I'm sure the principal and/or social worker or whoever is on staff in the summer can at least take you around. In general for K entry schools take it slow and do things like have K kids start with a half day or a day late. Some schools have kids visit for 15-30 min a few at a time the day before school starts.
OP: Thanks this is helpful. Yeah not sure if it is possible but I guess I can at least inquire. I think this school has 2 weeks of half days leading up to the full day so that...(more)3-23-2017 12:07pm
should help for sure. Still very nervous about the transition of course.
