Advice please - long post - we've been trying to move out of NYC this summer (we rent). have dc 3 in center base school. db due in november. current lease up oct 31 (1 bdrm... (more)
apt). there is a 3 bdrm avail in great neck - one of the areas we've been looking at because of it's good reputation for schools. we dont want to deal with the turning 5 - K- process in NYC because we want to be gone by then - but there are no guarantees. we can take this 3 bdrm in great neck - but it's a wash in terms of size of what we would get in NYC and $ (rent is cheaper, but we work in NYC, would need cars, train tix etc). i would need to rush to get dc 3 in a school in great neck. we were also planning to get increase in services in nyc... so would need to try and get thos ein great neck too. not sure of their K process - but my understanding is it's almost better anywhere else other than nyc - i.e. doesnt necessarily involve neuropscyh eval and attorney. what would u do??? it's prob our last chance to get out. need to move oct...

- I moved to burbs when dc was 2.5 and in EI to avoid the NYC school system. Dc is now 9. We have not needed an attny, did do a private np when dc was 6 but the school has done...(more) 9-9-2013 10:17am all the testing since then. I guess my point is that burbs are very different then nyc and you need to want that lifestyle change. In terms of schooling there are pros and cons to both so my advise is to sit down and really figure out what your priorities are. I wanted the option of space, empty play grounds, parks act. IMO as far as being a sn parent burbs are just as much work. In NYC the stress is intense with suing and getting into a school, in the burbs it's a lower level of constant watching and then meetings when it flairs up and there will be flair ups where you are at the school having team meetings problem solving.
- I preface this by saying that everyone's situation is individual. I, too, was scared of teh T-5 process. Ds is HFA (aspie) and we really struggled to find an appropriate place...(more) 9-9-2013 10:52am for him. We were nervous, as we could not afford to sue and I thought for sure he'd be in SN school. As it turns out, we found a great public fit (it was the most appropriate and free). If you're not sure of what you want to do, I'd stay another year in the city. You can always move next year when your lease is up and use this time to investigate the options carefully for yourself and through the filter of YOUR child. Districts that have a great reputation for some kids may not serve others at all. Try to be logical and not make a decision based on fear of what may happen. An increase in services is a real gift, especially these days!
- op - our dc will need special needs school. mild/moderate ASD. biggest (or most noticeable) delay/issue is speech. does not have sentences. so communication is a big issue...(more) 9-9-2013 11:05am
- np: IME burbs tend to cater to one end of the spectrum. A high functioning dc will need a sn college prep highschool program where a moderate dc may need a self contained HS room...(more) 9-9-2013 11:14am with a life skills / job placement program. Schools tend to do one or the other. When a dc is young almost any district can accommodate but as dc ages it gets harder. Middleshool is a big divide and so is HS. Not all schools have self contained middleschool programs. I know it's hard to think so hard into the future but if possible I would try to as this can help you pick the best fitting district from the start.
- a lot of progress can be made in 1-2 years, too! Just important to remember that when thinking about the future. 9-9-2013 11:27am
- op: of course. i think we are looking right now for overall a good SN program. great neck fits that bill. dc is too young for us to know where they will be in the next few...(more) 9-9-2013 11:29am years. a lot or progress can be made, or it can be more stagnant. and we just don't know right now if dc will remain mild or drift more towards moderate.
- I totally get it. In that case, if you're sold on great neck, go for it! 9-9-2013 11:41am
- and since it is a rental maybe you will find something more affordable - remember this is temporary. 9-9-2013 11:07pm
- yes, it's temporary. i just feel like we've been in 'temporary' for so long! (nyc was always 'temporary') 9-10-2013 12:44pm
