Can anyone offer academic job help? About to get my ph.d., was offered an adjunct job at a good school in Boston to teach two courses. I live in NY. They want me to interview in Boston... (more)
in a couple weeks. I don't want just an adjunct job, I want to know if there's a possibility for something longer, if I will be attending faculty meetings, etc. Can I ask to talk about the job over the phone first, or is that rude?

- Actually there are a couple schools in NYC (art schools in particular) that always give the visiting instructor title. So it's not unheard of. 5-31-2010 7:25am
- usually, it's a completely different job. 5-31-2010 7:40am

- I don't know but when I look at the faculty they have presently, they don't have someone doing what I woudl be hired to teach. 5-31-2010 7:28am
- nnp-but maybe that is an area they don't want/need right now. univ budgets are tight, more cutting back than expanding 5-31-2010 7:29am
- yes that's totally possible. And she could tell me that they're going to adjunct this the next few years. But it's 20th century art, photog, and film, and it's an Art school so tha...(more) 5-31-2010 7:30am
- NP from above: I'd go on the interview, honestly. Far easier to suss out the situation in person, and it's good practice. Boston isn't so far. 5-31-2010 7:31am
- ok Thanks everyone for the advice. I've actually never been on a real acad job interview, only adjunct. But this could be good practice. 5-31-2010 7:32am

- Go to the interview, but be up front and say that you are not interested in adjunct unless there is a defined path to faculty positions 5-31-2010 7:25am
