In our upstate NY small town, there's a Catholic school that offers a kindergarten class which is capped at 15 students. The class has one teacher, about whom I've heard good...
things, but it wouldn't have any assistant teacher or aide in the classroom. Not sure yet about the public kindergarten, but I think it might be more like 20 kids to a classroom, with a teacher and an aide for each class. I've heard that two of the three public kindergarten teachers are good, and there's no way to make sure about which teacher dc gets. Also, the Catholic school teacher has a master's in easrly chilhood education, AND a master's in special ed. Dc has Asperger's and fine motor and gross motor delays. School district will provide a special ed person for at least a few hours a week if dc is at public school (for social skills training, etc.), but not if dc is at Catholic school. Which school would you lean toward for next fall? Dc is currently in the Catholic pre-K with part-time SEIT, loves the school, has friends, and has made tremendous progress socially since last September. TIA!
This is so hard. I was in a similar position. I hired a bcba to do an eval of dc then to observe the schools. We did public. The following year we did public am, private pm. The...(more)3-1-2010 7:29am
private was a similar set up to what you describe 14 students and one aide. Our public had more support and I had to go with public for services SLP, OT, PT and social. The bcba wrote an ideal program and the public gave us more services. Is there anyone or anything like that around your area? A sn attny, advocate ect? Meet with them for a consultation to see if there are other options you don't know about?
You just have to ask a lot of questions and get everything set up before the fall. The Catholic School sounds great but I would be very upfront about everything and find out how they...(more)3-1-2010 9:34am
discipline. I was thinking of Catholic for my sensory seeking dc for the structure but recently he was playing with a little boy outside who goes there and the child told me they get Recess taken away as a punishment! Our behavior problems happen when my dc can get enough outside time. Anyway this was a question I didn't think to ask when we visited the school.
