I posted before about my odd job situation and HR got back to me with last/best offer. Still on the fence about this though. Weigh in if you want. Working full time from home for $80k.... (more)
Commute (2.5 hrs each way +extra child care costs too much). New management wants to change that and have me come in to office full time. Gave me choice to quit and be rehired as permalance for 67k and benefits and continue full time work from home. I would lose 6 months severance though.($35k). 2nd choice is leave w/ that severance. I pushed back and got them to agree to full salary/no benefits (dh will cover now), but they won't budge on severance. I need to work and don't see finding another work from job for $80k but it's killing me to lose 19 yrs worth of severance. I have to suck it uo right?

- those dickwads! I was looking for similar situation and I have to say it took me a good three months of banging on EVERY door. Jobless recovery... 11-12-2009 12:25pm
- I'm confused. Why would you ge severance if you're still going to be working there? 11-12-2009 12:26pm
- that is what I am asking too 11-12-2009 12:27pm
- 2 choices: I walk away from job and get 6 mos severance or I stay on as a permalance employee and lose the severance, so when I get laid off in the future I don't have the severance from...(more) 11-12-2009 12:27pm
- if you walk away with the severance, then you won't be working for them as an independent contractor or employee? 11-12-2009 12:29pm
- Right. They would be laying me off w/ severance and I would be gone and looking for a new job. The won't lay mem off w/ severance and then rehire me as freelance 11-12-2009 12:32pm
- i am the one below who is saying to get an attorney now. or just take the loss of the $35K, but i think it's worth getting an atty. 11-12-2009 12:33pm

- so, they could agree to 80k and then let you go next month 11-12-2009 12:31pm
- in theory yes but I am the only person doing a specific job on a special account that isn't going any where so they need me. If I choose to leave they will need me around for a couple...(more) 11-12-2009 12:34pm

- no - I'd get an attorney and let them finish the negotiations. seriously. you earned the severence and they can't make you quit. 11-12-2009 12:26pm
- they are offering to fire her and give her severance. nothing illegal in that 11-12-2009 12:28pm
- that's not what i read. i read they are offering for her to quit and lose her severance. 11-12-2009 12:29pm
- she can 'leave' with $35K severance 11-12-2009 12:30pm
- right and not have a job. 11-12-2009 12:31pm
- yes because you get severance when you leave a job. not when you stay at a job. 11-12-2009 12:31pm

- they said it's company policy that you need to quit first and be rehired if you go from full time to freelance status. Nobody is making me quit but they are saying that the only way I...(more) 11-12-2009 12:29pm

- it's not about what's legal and what isn't - it's about negotiations - that's what's happening. if she has an attorney at this juncture, she'll come out better in th 11-12-2009 12:32pm
- right - and that's my point. they are making a major change in the conditions of your job and using coercive means. get an attorney and you'll get what you want. 11-12-2009 12:30pm

- Would you sign a contract for the permalance? 11-12-2009 12:26pm
- say 70K no benefits, from home and no loss of severance 11-12-2009 12:26pm
- why do you think you should get severance if you are going to be paid to work from home? 11-12-2009 12:27pm
- yes, losing the severance does suck, but it looks like the best option 11-12-2009 12:27pm
- why would you get severance if they are offering you a full-time job with benefits? 11-12-2009 12:27pm
- look at it this way, you could have lost the job and taken one that was worse on all counts. That is a huge severance package that is fairly unheard of so it is hard to expect it keep...(more) 11-12-2009 12:28pm it. You could take your chances, take the severance and try to look for a better job closer to home. Or you take the job, and realize that the great pay and wah is worth the severance. And by the way, severance is only a benefit if they fired you under certain circumstances, so it is not like it was actual cash you are giving up. If the company went bankrupt, they would not have paid it.

- ack. this is going to be me in 5 months. I WAH and we are getting acquired. I am going to be screwed too. FWIW, I would probably take the offer b/c getting WAH gigs is hard. 11-12-2009 12:38pm

- np: ITA. I suppose it just depends on whether you want a new/better job, and can find one. Depends on what you do. I'd say $67K to work from home is pretty damn good. 11-12-2009 12:35pm

- exactly. and they know it. sucks to backtrack, but if you can't get as good a deal elsewhere... they have the upper hand. 11-12-2009 12:43pm

- oh that's miserable. do you think you can push back more for severance? this is really shitty of them 11-12-2009 12:32pm
- hold up...freelance,meaning you are no longer an employee? If so, that pay cut looks much worse since you'll have to pay taxes,SS on your own, right? 11-12-2009 12:39pm
- I'm e-mailing the HR woman now about that. Not sure because I think I am still an employee but a different kind. 11-12-2009 12:42pm
