DS has ADHD/EF issues. For 9th grade he has been placed in all level B classed (levels include Honors, A, B and C ). He is NOT an honors, but I am not sure if he is all B levels.... (more)
He has an average of about 85-87 all year in 8th grade. He does have a learning skills class every day which helps with EF etc. He also gets the usual accommodations with his IEP. Should I request that he is put in a couple of A level courses in 9th? So confused what is best for him

- Can you meet with his advisor/ case manager? 2-27-2021 11:13am
- I am going to try on Monday. He just got the news on Friday 2-27-2021 11:14am
- I think if you can sit down and figure out which classes he will be most successful in, you can come up with a game plan that challenges him without frustrating him. 2-27-2021 11:15am

- He's a B student at B level- I think this is his sweet spot. My concern with moving him up would be the increase in workload 2-27-2021 11:14am
- Yes, this is a concern, but I think 9th grade would be the best time to give the A class a go.. 2-27-2021 11:15am
- when was his last eval? 2-27-2021 11:16am
- I had a private NP eval at beginning of 7th 2-27-2021 11:17am
- Any academic weaknesses? IQ? 2-27-2021 11:21am
- IQ in the average range, writing and processing issues, execptionla memory and a few other things. I think it is basically writing/processing that are the biggest concerns 2-27-2021 11:24am
- Sounds like B level is the best place to start, build confidence and good strategies, then look at advancing in stronger subjects. 2-27-2021 11:26am
- Thanks! 2-27-2021 11:27am

- Bad time. Grades now count and self-esteem important 2-27-2021 11:17am
- ITA, but my concern is that he will be stuck in this level and think of himself a a B kid. Not great for his self esteem 2-27-2021 11:17am
- We all have strengths, academics doesn’t need to be one of them 2-27-2021 11:18am
- I am 100% ok with his strengths! He has many! I think my biggest concern is social at this point for him and him thinking that he is a "B"n student 2-27-2021 11:21am
- is this coming from him? Ask him 2-27-2021 11:22am
- It is , he asked why he is not in any A level classes 2-27-2021 11:28am
- and he knows about his disability 2-27-2021 11:31am
- He has always known about it. It is not a secret 2-27-2021 11:31am
- Good, it's an ongoing process to understand a disability, how it impacts, and how one feels about it 2-27-2021 11:32am

- It's worse for his self esteem to struggle and fail. Worth discussing with the school though- they might be able to explain 2-27-2021 11:20am
- See below. We started slow he got all As and slowly moved him up. His perception of himself changed 2-27-2021 11:21am +1 like
- his goal should be to be an A student at the level his is at 2-27-2021 11:21am +1 like
- That's too high of a standard 2-27-2021 11:22am
- an 85 average is a B. If he moves to a more advanced class he is either going to STILL get a B or worse, a C+ or B- 2-27-2021 11:23am
- regardless, setting a standard of A is quite high for a kid with such issues 2-27-2021 11:25am
- OK, but if he has issues, expecting a B in an honors class is the same type of pressure 2-27-2021 11:29am
- yeah, I already told the OP that B level sounds appropriate based on her info on him 2-27-2021 11:30am

- Is he stronger some subjects over others? 2-27-2021 11:15am
- He is just sort of the same across the board, he has a great memory but not a strong writer 2-27-2021 11:16am
- There will be a lot of writing in high school. My feeling is not to push kids like this- that they need to develop confidence and a good routine for work while work is manageable....(more) 2-27-2021 11:19am

- Why would you add to the workload of a kid wth ADHD and EF issues? 2-27-2021 11:16am
- Because ADHD kids may be able to self-regulate in some classes but not in others. -np 2-27-2021 11:18am

- My ADHD 11tj grader is in honors pre-calc and physics, regular history and English, basic (below regular) language. 2-27-2021 11:17am
- Thanks, does he get a lot of support in the honors classes? In school or a tutor? 2-27-2021 11:18am
- He's in the learning center at school. Receives SETSS (tutoring) at home. Gifted in math. SLD in written expression. 2-27-2021 11:21am

- we have a similar set up at our school ...levels are more 1,2,3 and 4...with 1 being skills level, 2 grade level, 3 advanced, 4 honors. I have a HS senior and a college...(more) 2-27-2021 11:20am sophomore. Both tried higher than 2 levels at various points and all it did was lower their GPA. Getting a B or B- in an advanced course does more harm than good. It doesn't sound like your kid is going to be going to a top 50 college so why stress him out? (I don't mean to sound disparaging ...my kids are/will be a colleges for B students
- My adhd/ef kid was in the special slow class in 9th. By 11th he was in part honors AP and in 12th took 4 AP classes. It's a process. Glad we started him really slow to build...(more) 2-27-2021 11:21am

- No, just concerned for my DS. I do not think there is a parent out there who is not concerned about their kid socially 2-27-2021 11:27am
- Right, but this isnt coming from HIM. Part of adolescence is for him to be the captain of his own ship and parents step back, listen and support 2-27-2021 11:29am
- It is coming from him. He asked why his is not in any A level classes 2-27-2021 11:30am
- Asking isnt the same as having low self esteem and he's not saying he'll lose friends or whatnot. Just be careful not to jump to conclusions and create more pressure 2-27-2021 11:32am
