And the insanity of keeping young kids cooped up in their rooms for 10 days on the infinistesimal chance that that might later test positive seems wrong to me.

middle schools bc/o positive test where a kid got COVID outside of school and then tested positive in school. But not one incidence of transmission from that in-classroom exposure. I know there are instances of in-school transmission, but VERY few in NYC where you have distancing and mask-wearing. Might it be time to change this rule? Alow kids to test out after 5 days or something? Actrually assess whether kids in the classroom were within 6 feet of the positive case?

a perfect student, they would have a 90% chance, so with a lottery their chances decrease dramatically. Yes, most people list the top schools as a preference. The people who gain the most from a lottery are the ones who couldnt have gotten in without it. The lottery works this way: evereyone submits their preferences in order. The lottery assigns each child a number ( which u will never know). The people with the lowest number are assigned to a school first, and are more likely to get their first choice. When that school becomes full, kids who list it first will not get in, the computer will look for a spot at their 2nd choice, and so on. Im not explaining it perfectly, but u get the idea.

There are lots of kids in private without great grades, but they were there since pre-k. They wouldnt be eager to admit an average student. If your dc has unimpressive grades, you should hope for a lottery in public. You have a better chance at a good middle school than if it were screened.
