DD's teacher will give the students a math test on Friday. They will have five minutes to answer 50 basic addition problems. I have no idea what the expectation is of a first grader one month into school with an assessment like this. Any ideas how many correct answers in 5 minutes would be considered a decent score??

  5. Elementary Grades are good but school recommends pull-out basic skills...(more) 10-2-2017 9:22pm (4 replies)
My first grade ds is going well in first grade. Although he gets distracted, his grades are good so far. Reading is on grade level. I have a math tutor and a reading tutor for him, just to make sure he stays on track. Both say he is doing well, on grade level, knows the material, etc. School just recommended pull-out basic skills instruction (1x per week for math and 2x per week for reading). The downside, to me, is that they are pull-out, so he would be doing remedial math and language arts work while missing other material in the class. Tutors think it is a bad idea. School did not explain their recommendation; they just asked me to sign consent. I am meeting with teacher tomorrow to ask how she made the determination that he needs remediation. What do you think?

  19. Elementary Struggling with my six year old son...(more) 6-6-2017 9:12pm (6 replies)
Hi. I am new here am just looking for some unbiased opinions. I have one child-- a six year old son, whom I adore. He is everything to his father and me. We have had a rough year this year with him in kindergarten. We found out he has auditory processing disorder and got him a 504 plan. He is doing better at school, but his teacher thinks he belongs in a resource room instead of a general ed classroom. We met with her and the principal, and neither one came out and directly said they think he should be in a special ed room, but they beat around the bush about it. Behaviorally, he is usually very good; I have been relieved that he tends not to cause trouble and is liked by most adults. Today, however, he came home with a note from his teacher saying he was "disrespectful" by mimicking what she said and laughing. This is new. Apparently a lot of the kids do this, and she has been trying to reign them in. I am not happy to hear my kid joined in with this behavior, though.

His reading, math, writing, etc. are all at grade level, but apparently the teacher needs to redirect him a lot. It seems to frustrate her quite a bit. The school just bought a sound field system (classroom amplification system) for him that they will have in place next year (first grade). That may help since he has auditory processing disorder, which means listening is hard for him. A sound field system should make following along in class easier. (I sure hope so....) I think the fact that his academic skills are not low is the reason they stopped short of saying he should be in a resource room, but they seem to think he will have trouble keeping up with the pace of first grade.

Influence on issue: Ex-wife has no rules in her home, does not monitor what the kids do including on the internet, what they eat is catered to the kids (mainly the youngest who is now 9), nor chores or responsibilities. In our home, where 5 of the 6 reside the majority of the year (90%+) there are rules, responsibilities, expectations, consequences for actions as well as rewards, variety of meals (sometimes loved and sometimes not), as well as careful monitoring of behaviors and influences including video games and the Internet. Mom wants her youngest boy but not the middle boy as she has no influence over the middle, and extreme over the youngest. The oldest also has heavy influence on the youngest. So, mom and oldest brother every time they have the youngest say things to him like, "I hate her," "She is a bad person," "She is not your mom," "Her kids are not your brothers," "You don't have to listen to her," "Is she feedi

talking to SIL - she always finds subtle ways to put me down or one-up me. DH says it's insecurity. Of course, I could do the same to her if I chose to, but it doesn't come naturally to me (I'd rather just be silent). It's just annoying bc we work hard all week (well, I work) and would prefer to have pleasant times and conversations on weekends. But it's not like we would ever cut them off. I like BIL.
