  2. Boston PSA! Parents of aggressive or explosive kids (or just angry and hot tempered). Get your kid a full OT eval! Not the city one, a professional one. We now have incredible insight as...(more) 1-27-2017 9:01am (28 replies)
to why our ds -- who has struggled with aggressive behavior since forever -- has the issues he has. His dysregulation stems from his body. His vestibular system (sense of balance) is disordered and his visual system development is delayed. He scored in the bottom 5th percentile on measures of vestibular function, visual scanning, object resolution (making two strings converge, correctly identifying a target as in front of or behind a reference point), and a host of other measures. I was in tears. This poor kid. Anyway he's still young (the OT reassured me) and the can be lots of measurable improvement. And lots of supports that can work in school right away. We have to have him see a pediatric developmental ophthalmologist as well as the OT therapy and get recommendations to school for supports ASAP. Sad it took us this long hence the PSA! Do NOT assume your aggressive, oppositional, explosive, impulsive, angry kid isn't desperately trying make his body work like everyone

momming this till he is comfortable, happy and loves himself. The OT said his issues cannot be 'fixed' but you can learn to make progress. TONS of strategies for self-regulation for these vestibular kiddos. We are all over it.

and if he got upset would dive under sofa cushions. The OT explained that the crush-hugs were a red flag for disordered vestibular feedback. He also does this move where he braces his arms on a table and jumps up. Class vestibular/deep pressure self-stim.
