Flame away, but I think it is irresponsible parenting to not teach your kid how to swim by age 8 or so.

- My SN dc has been in swim lessons since 5yo and I feel strongly about this too - it is a HUGE safety issue! 3-18-2012 9:08pm
- same, and he is a great swimmer, but I can see if a child has physical issues, it might not be possible. 3-18-2012 9:09pm
- For sure. For a child like that the chance that he would be near water lightly supervised is lower, too. 3-18-2012 9:10pm

- DH didn't learn how to swim until college. He was never near the water, never had access to a pool, why would his mother prioritize it over food. 3-18-2012 9:10pm
- In most cases people can do it but just don't make it a priority. Or have a skittish kid and don't feel like dealing. 3-18-2012 9:11pm
- My kids both swim, but I've known enough people in enough difficult circumstances to understand why a lot of kids haven't learned. 3-18-2012 9:12pm
- well I grew up poor and still don't swim very well so I make time to spend that $8 a week to make sure it doesn't happen to my kids. 3-18-2012 9:11pm
- are you currently poor? 3-18-2012 9:12pm
- no. and so I make it a point to provide them with this life skill. it's one of our top priorities after school. Not stuff like tennis. 3-18-2012 9:13pm +2 likes

- well since you have a computer and internet service, I think you can probably afford swim lessons at the Y. they have them on weekends too. and if you are working 7 days a weeka...(more) 3-18-2012 9:17pm and cannot take your kids, I'm sure someone is watching them, right? perhaps they can take them. - oh my kids swim competitively. I just understand that there are circumstances where it isn't that easy. 3-18-2012 9:19pm

And I read tons of articles afterwards about drowning and they said that there have been tons of instances where people (mainly kids) drown right in front of people, because they don't really look like they are drowning when they go down (you apparently do an instinctive climbing motion trying to get above water that looks somewhat intentional.) That's probably why her brothers didn't notice. So awful.
