Apraxia vs Oral motor (ie Physical vs Neurological)... (more)
Question then regarding mis-diagnosis of apraxia - is the st the same if its just oral-motor, and not neurological based? We have recieved a diagnosis just from ST of apraxia but have our doubts... trying to get a dev ped appt within the next few months, but curious - if apraxia is ruled out then does the therapy change? Should we push to have dev ped appt moved up so we don't lose valuable time. Right now treating as if he has apraxia..thanks!

- I'm the OR who responded below that oral-motor issues can look like apraxia. It's basically the same protocol: PROMPT technique for speech therapy, and oral-motor exercises to...(more) 2-4-2010 2:34pm strengthen the muscles (chewy tubes, bubble blowing, chewing different textures like hard, crunchy things, and very chewy, gummy things - both strengthen the jaw). Also get your DC off of the bottle or sippy cup and onto a straw cup ASAP.
- OP: ok thanks. As long as we're not doing the "wrong" thing for right now. He loves his speech therapist. We've seen a HUGE increase in the amount of words he has, and his attempt...(more) 2-4-2010 2:35pm speaking, but its almost more frustrating for me, because here he is saying full sentences but i still can't understand him!
- if your 2.3 yo is speaking in full sentances you are doing pretty well. My 2.5 yo (who probably has apraxia) has tons of words but still only puts 2-3 together, and he's been in speech...(more) 2-4-2010 2:37pm
- ^^and most of his words are still pretty garbled 2-4-2010 2:37pm
- np: honestly, both of your DCs are doing well. The kids I know who are truly apraxic are 4 and only putting 2 words together., and have had speech for years 2-4-2010 2:38pm
- or: thanks. I really think my ds will be fine in the long run, i'm actually not that worried about it. Was trying to give some perspective to OP 2-4-2010 2:39pm
- I think he's very young to be able to tell where they weakness is stemming from - esp. just a speech therapist. A Dev. ped. skilled in diagnosing apraxia would also look at how your DC...(more) 2-4-2010 2:37pm

- ^^and I'm sure you know that Dr. Agin is the guru of apraxia. Perhaps go to B&N or even the library and check out her book "The Late Talker" 2-4-2010 2:36pm
- i do want to read it. Does anyone know if it pushes all the natural healing things, ie Nurtriiveda? I'm not into that stuff. ...(more) 2-4-2010 2:38pm Did it for years for fertility (wheat grass, fish oils, etc. etc. yoga, on and on) and never did any good. Actually give kids vitamins etc. but don't want to hear that a vit. supplement will "cure" him, nor read it!
- I don't know how much Agin actually pushes it, but definitely she's into fish oil. Dr. Cross isn't 2-4-2010 2:39pm
- good to know. maybe i'll go with cross then for a consult. 2-4-2010 2:44pm
- np: I would not go to Dr. Cross for opinion on Apraxia. 2-4-2010 2:47pm
- REALLY? why? plz do tell, i need to go in the right direction with this and am lost! 2-4-2010 2:51pm
- Dr. Agin is much more knowledgeable in this area. 2-4-2010 2:52pm
- OR above: Dr. Agin is THE expert on apraxia. That said, I wouldn't run to her since your DC is only 2.3 Wait until she's at least 3 2-4-2010 2:54pm
- ok, thanks! 2-4-2010 2:57pm
