- i heard pool. Your only choice?
- NYC Schools Mkes me sad how many moms here are glad the US is becoming a Dickensian society :(
- I don't think so many, actually
- exaggerate much?
- Oh come on! Kids need to get jobs and I need a clean chimney!!
- How are we becoming Dickensian? Certainly we are offer more government regulation and government intervention forhealth care, etc. than we had in the 70s
- NYC Schools NEST middle school test: advice?
- NYC Schools are there any NYC private schools that are a mix of progressive and traditional?
- most of the ones we looked at are llike this, it seems like they've all gone to the middle.
- ^^do you have some schools in mind?
- no
- I think a few are. Trevor, Friends
- dalton certainly.
- the HOS at riverdale describes RCS that way
- most of the ones we looked at are llike this, it seems like they've all gone to the middle.
- NYC Schools Really love Ethical Culture school. Should we apply dd for PK or K? What is easier?
- why not both?
- can you do that?
- yes, apply for pk and if you get rejected apply fro k next year. you can't decide what grade to apply to, if that's what you mean, you apply based on age
- no, i just meant which year is easier to get in if at all
- can't say. some people say PK, some say K, but why not just plan ti apply twice? they won't summarily reject you for K just bc they (if they) rejected you for pre K
- no, i just meant which year is easier to get in if at all
- yes, apply for pk and if you get rejected apply fro k next year. you can't decide what grade to apply to, if that's what you mean, you apply based on age
- can you do that?
- everyone loves it until they actually send their kids there.
- I know 6 families there and they adore it
- I know a bunch who are not impressed.
- if they are hardcore upper east siders, then yes, I can imagine. We are a downtown family and it's different
- i know a bunch of UWSers who are not so happy
- np: why are they not happy? Where would they have been happier?
- i know a bunch of UWSers who are not so happy
- if they are hardcore upper east siders, then yes, I can imagine. We are a downtown family and it's different
- I know a bunch who are not impressed.
- not true we HATED it
- I know 6 families there and they adore it
- ugh we hated it
- much easier for pre-K
- why not both?
- NYC Schools PTA meetings...do you attend? what school age are your kids?
- no. daycare & first grade.
- I only attend when I'm the class rep.
- ivolunteer a lot but don't attend meetings. 4, 8, and 9th grades.
- NYC Schools Choosing Middle Schools. Stuck in Dis 1 in NYC. Can't decide if Eastside or Tompkins should be my 1st choice...ugh!
- NYC Schools What schools would be good for a dc with anxiety interfering with schoolwork but no learning disabilities?
- Honestly, look at all of them, but if the anxiety is enough to impact that, maybe West End Day if there are no other major issues? I'd also look at Parkside, Aaron, Gillen...(more)
- NYC Schools Anyone know how washington market makes admission decisions? It's not FCFS but there is no interview or playdate
- NYC Schools Whats the consenses on that school ICE? Located in Manhattan.
- my dd went there
- okay...thoughts on it? pls.
- perfectly fine, they have a great debate team, good teachers and they don't really care about testing. my dd got into 6 out of 7 colleges she applied for.
- op:that's fantastic! My ds has been in a structured setting pretty much all his life. He's a pretty well grounded kid book wise. I wonder what he would be like if we placed him in...(more)

- my dd went there
- NYC Schools Anyone applying to Avenues school? How do you know what it will be like?
- So many posts about it in urban baby.
- generally good or bad? Have you visitied the school yet?

- NYC Schools Any D3 middle school moms around? If we pick Computer or Delta as a first choice, what on earth would we pick 2d and 3d? Are there any appropriate options for a kid with 4/4?
- wow! you are speaking a foreign lang to me!
- It sucks, doesn't it? Are you going to the MS Principal's forum tonight?
- Yeah I suppose so. But no matter what the principals say, the average test scores in most of the D3 schools are not great
- Did you look at Mott Hall II? Test scores were pretty good and the kids were impressive.
- Yes but it is also a first choice only school, you can't use it as a second choice if you put Computer first
- Did you look at Mott Hall II? Test scores were pretty good and the kids were impressive.
- Yeah I suppose so. But no matter what the principals say, the average test scores in most of the D3 schools are not great
- No, that is the problem with d3. 1 choice and if you don't get it, it is the burbs
- Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. So what exactly do people choose on the form? I doubt anyone puts down only one choice, you've got to pick SOMETHING, don't you?
- Yes, but it is a waste of time. Last year Mott Hall did take a handful of people who had put it second
- Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. So what exactly do people choose on the form? I doubt anyone puts down only one choice, you've got to pick SOMETHING, don't you?
- NEST?
- That's a long shot, no?
- What about the unzoned schools? I know D3 kids who went to Manhattan East or PPAS (not to mention Anderson or NEST)
- ^^^And what about MSC's middle school?
- ^^^Yes - and Mott Hall 2, as mentioned above. Actually, I know a lot of kids who went there
- They are virtually a first choice school , and will likely to be this year
- What about the other schools I mentioned above?
- They are not D3 schools, so do not go on that form
- Right - so they are options outside of that form which is a good thing. Look into them.
- Yes, for sure. But what do people pick as their 2d and 3d choices? There seems to be no good answer.
- Right - so they are options outside of that form which is a good thing. Look into them.
- And PPAS requires that you have some performing ability
- They are not D3 schools, so do not go on that form
- They say they are a first choice school
- What about the other schools I mentioned above?
- MSC has very few spots and MHII is 1st choice only - neither is a good 2d or 3d choice
- They are virtually a first choice school , and will likely to be this year
- MSC's middle school has 10-12 spots for 6th grade
- ^^^Yes - and Mott Hall 2, as mentioned above. Actually, I know a lot of kids who went there
- All really really hard to get into. And NEST and Manhattan East are both an hour commute by bus for UWS kids, I find that hard to stomach for a 6th grade traveling alone
- How is Manhattan East as far as NEST from the UWS?
- Manhattan East is not as far as Nest I suppose. But I live at the bottom of the district, its 2 long bus rides uptown and crosstown
- And I live near the 96th St crosstown so it's not at all that far IMO. Whereas NEST, for both of us, is incredibly far
- Yes, better for you for sure. I live in Lincoln Towers, my kid would be on buses for almost an hour :-(
- See - I would take the subway to 96th and then the crosstown bus there
- But you need to demonstrate some proficiency in the arts, my kid is so not arty
- See - I would take the subway to 96th and then the crosstown bus there
- Are you north of 96th? You could apply to Columbia Secondary.
- Nope, Lincoln Towers
- Sorry, meant for OR above who said she lived near 96th St. crosstown.
- Nope, Lincoln Towers
- Yes, better for you for sure. I live in Lincoln Towers, my kid would be on buses for almost an hour :-(

- ^^^And what about MSC's middle school?
- What did they do with Hudson Honors - doesn't it have a new name/charter or something?
- They are trying to make it a k-8 with 191, not a great option
- Oh really? 191 is not a good school at all
- It is now called the Museum School
- Maybe if we all send our 4/4 kids there it will be good.
- That would be a good thought, all of the D3 kids in the 60s and 70s should take it over. But for now the test scores are not good.
- Maybe if we all send our 4/4 kids there it will be good.
- They are trying to make it a k-8 with 191, not a great option
- NYC Schools Third Street Music School Settlement-Anyone familiar with the Strings program
- are you looking for a serious music school or a fun school?
- NYC Schools can two kids with different personalities do well at a progressive school?
- of course. do you really believe that the progressive schools have only one type of dc
- good point
- Nothing to do with personality. Progressive v. traditional...in the end it comes down to innate intelligence and how much work your child do.
- of course. do you really believe that the progressive schools have only one type of dc
- NYC Schools can someone compare Ethical Culture to City and Country for me please?
- bad to worse
- NYC Schools mom of 4th grader... would you let your kid miss 5 days of school to go out of town? How much will middle schools look at absences?
- in a heartbeat. where ya going?
- Paris... wedding and then some.
- of course! do not even worry about it. talk to teacher is all
- are you crazy lady?
- what?
- Do you have a 4th grader? I would never do this. Middle school apps are like college apps in NYC!!
- so fucking ridiculous
- Middle school apps? Do you mean applications?
- are you crazy lady?
- of course! do not even worry about it. talk to teacher is all
- Paris... wedding and then some.
- no fucking way. That's the grade they look at attendance for middle school.
- I would not do this. Too dangerous
- ditto
- dangerous?
- CPS will be called
- Omg, no they won't
- CPS will be called
- No I wouldn't.
- Kindergarten is one thing.. 4th is another
- in NYC - NFW. 4th grade is the year that counts most for middle schools and attendance counts!! (from what i've heard, not btdt yet)
- i would
- do you have a 4th grader?
- 2nd grader - not something i would do in MS and beyond
- do you have a 4th grader?
- Np- what do you all mean about middle school?
- no
- Absences matter less than chronic lateness. But you're still taking a risk.
- I wouldn't but our school is very strict about this stuff
- in a heartbeat. where ya going?
- NYC Schools is it bad if we apply to a private school now that application due date is Nov 1st? We just decided to do it. Does it look like we aren't interested?
- Fine.
- It is fine but some schools stop at a certain number despite their deadline so you may be waitlisted for a tour
- NYC Schools So Overwhelmed with this entire middle school process. For the G&T citywide schools. Does my child have to take a test for each school?
- NYC Schools Most effective in-class accommodations for inattentive ADHD dc? 10yo, MS school, tia
- NYC Schools Does it really make a difference if i bring my entering public middles school kid on a school tour with me? This would mean I'd have to bring him late to school.
- sigma
- que eso?
- sorry wrong post
- que eso?

- NYC Schools Just came back from Middle School Dist 1 Fair. So depressing.
- how so?
- limited options.
- np. dist 1 blows.
- so glad we live in d2. gl.
- thanks!
- I don't think District 1 is alone in this. At least if you get into NEST, you have a shorter commute? Maybe?
- hoping. there is a chance, still we need a fallback.
- how do i find out what district I am in?
- where do you live?
- how specific do i have to be? zip code?
- that's a start. go to doe website if you don't want to post here.
- how specific do i have to be? zip code?
- where do you live?
- how so?
- NYC Schools What are the chances that my kid who got all 4's on his 4th grade state test get into a district 2 school, coming from district 1?
- NYC Schools I grew up in a house where the fridge was bulginglyl overstocked. Too much bread that went moldy, fruits and vegetables that spoiled. Wasted leftovers... I think I have a...(more)

- upper middle
- No, what's weird is posting this in NYC Schools. That is seriously fucking twisted.
- sorry... didn't notice i was posting here
- where you working class growing up?
- NYC Schools My kid is a B student. It seems that everyone's kid here is either G&T or special needs. Nothing in between
- I often think that the B/C students are either in private school or in the burbs.
- ^^^However, I do know for HS that there are B students at schools like Beacon, Millennium, ElRo, etc.
- Is taht surprising? What about c students? there are no C students in these schools? Do they get kicked out?
- but you realize that's not true right?
